India plans to use ICTs to foster gender equality and mitigate the digital divide in the country in pursuit of the post-2015 development agenda. At the recent UN Session of the Commission of the Status of Women, Vinday Sheel Oberoi, the Secretary of the Indian Ministry of Women and Child Development said, ” Enabling use of ICTs tools in advancing gender equality and empowerment of women would be a game changer in this process and help overcome the digital divide.”

In particular, the Indian government seeks to mainstream gender into its programmes and policies and mentions a particular commitment to improving the budgetary commitment to such initiatives. Particular projects aimed at achieving this goal include the “Sukanya Samridhi Yojna’ all female bank for women entrepreneurs and the “Save the Girl Child, Educate Her” (“Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao”) project.
