A recent seminar, “Promoting ICT Opportunities for Women Entrepreneurs,” organized by the Asai Foundation and the Centre on Budget and Policy of Dhaka University, highlighted the importance of ICT for providing equal opportunities for female entrepreneurs in Bangladesh.

Partha Pratim, secretary of the ICT division of the telecommunications and information technology ministry, believes women will be at the forefront of what will become a knowledge-based economy in the country by 2041.

In response, the Asia Foundation has launched a pilot project to empower women in Barisal, Rajshahi, Rangpur and Sylhet. This 18-month project offers networking opportunities, and capacity building for women’s business forums, and provides access to ICT tools. One particularly noteworthy element of this project, for example, is the development of a “mobile network with a concessionary tariff scheme” for women entrepreneurs.
