Mr. Lois Benedict, chairman of the Tanzania League for the Blind (TLB) recently spoke at a training for the blind at the Tanzania Communication Regulatory Authority in Dar es Salaam.

Mr. Benedict emphasized the importance of ICT to help the blind live more independently in the country. One particular challenge he mentioned is related to monetary transactions, which he claims can be improved with the use of ICTs. “They should make it formal that all mobile phones and computers have a programme for the blind,” he said.

Mr. Paul Makonda, the Commissioner of the Kinondoni District, promised to heed Mr. Benedict’s call for ICT support for the blind, promising equipment such as white canes and an embossing machine, among other tools.

This equipment is expected to arrive before August of this year, though Mr. Makonda further promised to continue working on this issue to improve quality of life for the blind in Tanzania.
