Melanie Perkins has been a self-described “serial entrepreneur” since she was 19 years old, having founded both Canva and Fusion Books in the 9 years since then.

Fusion Books, her first entrepreneurial endeavor during university, is a multi-national online yearbook design business, which has since become the biggest yearbook publisher in Australia.

Canva, her latest business, which she founded in 2012, is a web and iOs app that allows users to create professional graphic designs without knowledge of design programs like Adobe Photoshop or inDesign.

The business has raised US$27.6 million since its foundation. These include notable VC firms such as Matrix Partners, Shasta Ventures, and Blackbird Ventures, as well as celebrities such as Owen Wilson. They are also working closely with AngelList.

5 million people in almost 180 countries around the world use Canva, including 40% of Fortune 500 companies.

Canva recently also launched Canva for Work and will pioneer Canva for Good for non-profits soon.

So what’s her advice to other entrepreneurs? First, she emphasizes the importance of serving customer needs rather than focusing on reaching investors. Communication within the company is also key to foster cohesion and motivation. Finally, she stresses learning by doing as the best way to achieve success.
