Students from the University of Washington create SignAloud to translate sign language into speech

Two undergraduate students from the University of Washington won the Lemelson-MIT Student Prize worth $10,000 USD for the creation of “SignAloud” project to translate sign language into text or speech. The invention consists in a pair of gloves that recognizes hand postures and sends the data via Bluetooth to a computer. Once the data is retrieved, if it matches one of the registered gestures, the computer plays the word on a speaker.

According to the creators of “SignAloud”, differently from other inventions currently available in the market, their gloves are lightweight, compact and ergonomic to use as everyday accessories. Additionally, the stated the purpose of the gloves was to provide a tool to enhance communication between speakers of American Sign Language and the rest of the world.
