Online project connects students with scientists in Kenya

“I am a Scientist, Get me out of here” initiative, organized by the Kenya Medical Research Institute, is an online program that connects secondary school students with local scientists to promote higher standards for STEM education. The event was first piloted in Kenya in 2014 and it has now continued to happen for four consecutive years.

The initiative was created based on former experience from other projects developed in the UK, and it supports local leaders to promote involvement of schools and researchers into getting students engaged in STEM related careers. According to Adala, scientist from the Kenya Medical Research Institute, “Our evaluation found that school engagement activities promoted students confidence in speaking to researchers, nurtured an interest in science, particularly biology, and raised curiosity about future careers related to research.”
