WTDC-17: Digital skills and job creation opportunities for women and girls

The side events organized on the occasion of the World Telecommunication Development Conference (WTDC-17) that took place in Buenos Aires, Argentina from 9-20 October represented an opportunity for different stakeholders from all over the world to discuss relevant topics pertaining ICTs and their role for social and economic development. One of these side events, the Women’s Breakfast, was dedicated to discussing the lack of girls and women in ICT studies and careers requiring advanced digital skills.

The International Telecommunications Union (ITU) is trying to address this issue through two main initiatives, the International Girls in ICT Day Campaign launched in 2010, and the Digital Skills for Decent Jobs for Youth campaign jointly launched with the International Labor Organization (ILO) in June 2017.

Last October 10, 2017, the Women’s Breakfast provided an excellent opportunity to showcase initiatives related to these two campaigns and share experiences on facilitating digital skills and job creation opportunities for women and girls. Some ideas that were explored included training programs and job placement services.
