Caribbean Hackathon celebrated Girls in ICT Day

SheLeadsIT and Change Makers Development Ltd. are organizing a Girls in ICT Day Caribbean Hackathon that gathered 800 girls from five countries to show their digital skills on April 26, 2018. The event will be organized to celebrate International Girls in ICT Day, adopting #SafeGirlsSafeFuture as its main theme.

High school and tertiary-level students from Jamaica, Barbados, Trinidad and Tobago, Guyana and St. Vincent and the Grenadines participated in the hands-on exercise using their digital skills to solve social challenges. Several private and public sector entities supported the event and provided a series of workshops for participants to improve their skills before the competition.

According to Bridget Lewis, co-founder of SheLeadsIT, “To produce a versatile Caribbean workforce capable of navigating the ongoing digital revolution we must get more women involved… In the next 10 years, 80 percent of jobs will require a blend of STEM. We believe it is critical to engage women earlier in the pipeline to bridge the digital gender divide.”
