International Congress of Technology and Tourism for Diversity takes place in Málaga, Spain from 23 to 25 October 2019
The third International Congress of Technology and Tourism for Diversity is being held in Málaga, Spain from 23 to 25 October 2019 to showcase initiatives and projects in the field of technology and tourism which promote respect for diversity and the inclusion of all people, including those with disabilities.
ITU, together with Microsoft, IBM, Samsung and Atos, opened the Congress on 23 October with an interactive discussion on “Accessibility Management in Big Companies,” which was attended by over 600 participants. Through its Digital Inclusion Programme ITU supports global stakeholders in their implementation of ICT accessibility, and is therefore a key partner to build inclusive digital societies.
The International Congress of Technology and Tourism for Diversity is organised annually by the ONCE Foundation, a Spanish entity working towards cooperation and social inclusion of persons with disabilities. The event is organized under the framework of Article 9 of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, which calls upon states to take appropriate measures to ensure that persons with disabilities can enjoy, on an equal basis, their right to “travel and communicate (including digital communication, products and services).”
ICTs are embedded in all aspects of people’s lives, as emphasized by the European Accessibility Act and stressed in an ENAT (European Network for Accessible Tourism) report on the rights of tourists with disabilities in the European Union framework: “Accessibility is not only necessary for people with disabilities but also for the elderly, for families with young children, for people with temporary or chronic diseases, among many others. Actually accessibility is a requirement from the environment that we all need, but we are only aware of it when we need it, when there are barriers that restrict it.
