Pakistan Promotes Digital Inclusion
The Pakistani Minister of State for Information technology recently attended the GSMA Mobile World Congress Summit on “Digital Inclusion” in Barcelona. Here she emphasized the challenge of including all members of society in ICT and mentions the government’s particular focus on empowering women and persons with disabilities through digital inclusion. “Digital inclusion lies at the heart of our ICT policies and, in this regard, the role of all the stakeholders is critically important,” she said. “It is incumbent on governments to appreciate and address this greater policy agenda, telecom operators to facilitate, through infrastructure development and content/application providers to customize and to innovate solutions.”
She mentioned the government’s universal broadband service goals as well, and discussed the development of Pakistan’s telecom sector with the CEOs of Etisalat, Telenor and VimpleCom Groups. GSMA recognized the country for its commitment to such goals, awarding it the 2015 Spectrum for Mobile Broadband Award.
