Lwazi Digital Literacy Training Project to train women in Northern Cape, South Africa

The Telecommunications Department of Northern Cape, South Africa launched the Lwazi Digital Literacy Training Project to provide young women with further digital skills training after school to promote the growth and diversity of the national ICT industry. However, considering the diverse set of skills required to succeed in today’s labor market, the program will also teach additional topics related to communication, leadership and entrepreneurism.

To support the program, the Telecommunications Department and the Office of the Northern Cape premier coordinated the creation of a website to support women to find ICT jobs and expand their networks within the industry. According to the telecommunication deputy minister, Hlengiwe Mkhize, “Through this Web site, women will be able to include their business profiles, access more business information and also give them the opportunity to network in their community.”

Besides its role as an employment enabler platform, the website will also serve as a tool to connect women with local authorities to get informed and denounce gender-based violence.
