Australia’s Audio Description Working Group will advocate for including features on TV programs for persons with disabilities

A new Audio Description Working Group was created by the government of Australia to come up with solutions to increase the availability of audio description services in the country. The purpose of this feature is to present verbal descriptions of the soundtrack of television programs, films, DVDs and live performances to attain the needs of persons with vision disabilities.

A past trial version of audio description on iview launched by Australian Broadcasting Corporation 15 months ago, showed that the feature is feasible for implementation in online programs.  Government representatives from broadcasting and streaming industries, audio description service providers and other key stakeholders will participate in this new working group to advance the project.

The first report of the working group will be handed by December 31, 2017. Full references for the group and the trial of audio description are available at the government’s site.
